The Canonical Chinese Medicine Training™ designed by Dr. Versluys, instructs on the theory and practice of the Han-dynasty (circa 200 CE) style of Chinese medicine according the principles of the Shanghan Lun and the Jingui Yaolue.
The unique background of Dr. Versluys in rigorous university academics and research, as well as traditional training with masters, along with Dr. Versluys’ personal constellation of socio-geographical qualities of being a Westerner, having lived and trained in China for over a decade and now living and working in the United States, have made this program unique and unrivalled in training Westerners in the clinical application of the classics of East Asian medicine.
Dr. Versluys believes firmly that to master the clinical practice of East Asian medicine, as taught in China, Japan or Korea, one must master the classics or canons that form its foundation. As such, ICEAM offers a post-graduate training that emulates the classical model of discipleship and makes such instruction available for graduates living in the West, treating patients living in industrialized nations.
The program is mostly geared towards high efficacy in the clinical application of East Asian herbal medicine along with the smooth integration of acupuncture and moxa into that practice. The Tian-Zeng lineage is one of the most pragmatist and advanced styles of herbalism. Its theoretical construct is firmly rooted in the Han-dynasty classics of the Yellow Emperor Internal Canon huangdi neijing, Classic of Difficulties nan jing, Divine Farmer Classic of Materia Medicine shennong bencao jing, and the lost Decoction Classic tangye jing. Its practice fuses clinical practicality typical to folk medicine with advanced medical insight originally customary to only the Confucian intelligentsia of yore. For years, Dr. Versluys immersed himself in the proper training of this art, and has now finally developed a program that allows Western students to learn the clinical application of the classics with a purity and efficacy formerly inaccessible and consequently unattainable.
The program is sequential and is to be taken as a series, though some modules can be taken independently. The program currently consists of more than 20 modules with a total number of approximately 400 hours. The training is conducted on weekends but clinical preceptorship is conducted during regular work hours. The training is recognized for Continuing Education Units (CEU) by the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (NCCAOM) in the United States and is specifically recognized for Professional Development Activity (PDA) by the California State Acupuncture Board, for practitioners in the state of California. The training is recognized in the United Kingdom for professional development activity and credits are recognized for application towards completion of the Masters in Science in Chinese Medicine Professional Studies at the College of Integrated Chinese Medicine in Reading in cooperation with Kingston University. In Germany, the course is sponsored by the Ausbildungszentrum Mitte in Offenbach, Germany, and credits are recognized by the Arbeitsgemeinschaft for Klassische Akupunktur und Traditionelle Chinesische Medizin (AGTCM).
